Modern AI for robotics works on a simple but costly principle: the model gets millions of examples, tries thousands of combinations, makes an error, receives feedback, tries again. Technically this is called reinforcement learning or imitation learning — and both approaches share a common denominator: they consume enormous amounts of energy and still make surprisingly basic mistakes.
Timothy Duggan, Pierrick Lorang, Hong Lu, and Matthias Scheutz from the School of Engineering at Tufts University asked an apparently simple question: What if we taught AI rules and abstract concepts — the same way we teach children — instead of letting it figure everything out through trial and error?

Neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence isn't a new term — but only now is it beginning to deliver in practice on the promises theorists have been making for decades. It's a hybrid approach that combines:

A simple analogy: conventional AI learns to solve a puzzle by solving it thousands of times. Neuro-symbolic AI understands the rules of solving — and transfers them to a different puzzle it has never seen.
Numbers That Speak for Themselves
The research team tested their system on a classic robotics problem — the Tower of Hanoi — and the results exceeded expectations:
- Accuracy: 95% success rate for the neuro-symbolic system vs. just 34% for standard VLA models
- Training energy consumption: only 1% of the energy needed to train traditional systems
- Operational energy consumption: 5% of the energy compared to conventional approaches
- Training time: 34 minutes vs. over 36 hours for competing models
An even more remarkable result came in a test with an unknown problem — a situation the system had never been trained on. While traditional models failed completely, the neuro-symbolic approach achieved 78% success. The ability to generalize to new situations is precisely one of the greatest weaknesses of today's AI systems.
Why This Matters Right Now
The energy demands of AI have become one of the most serious problems in the entire field. A large data center can consume as much electricity as a small city. Training a single large language model can produce hundreds of tons of CO₂ equivalent. And demands keep growing — each new generation of models is more powerful but also hungrier.
The European Union is aware of this. The AI Act, which came into force in 2024, emphasizes sustainability and transparency of AI systems among other things. Approaches like neuro-symbolic AI are thus in direct alignment with where European regulation is heading — and could open doors for technologies that would otherwise run into energy limits.
For businesses and research institutions looking for a path to deploy AI without astronomical infrastructure costs, this approach represents a real alternative. Training in 34 minutes instead of 36 hours means that experiments previously requiring dedicated GPU clusters can be conducted on standard research hardware.
Robotics as a Testing Laboratory
Robotics is an ideal testing ground for such research. Robots must solve long sequences of steps (so-called long-horizon tasks), where an error at the beginning invalidates everything that follows. This is precisely where the weakness of approaches built on pure statistical learning shows — a system may excel at short tasks but fails when it must plan ahead.
The Tufts University research will be officially presented at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) in Vienna in May 2026 — one of the most prestigious robotics conferences in the world. That alone speaks to the weight the scientific community attaches to the results.
Will the Results Transfer to Practice?
The critical question of course is: does it only work in the lab, or in the real world too? The researchers are cautious on this point — the Tower of Hanoi is a task with structured rules, while real industrial environments are more chaotic. The authors themselves mention extending testing to more complex, less predictable scenarios as the next step.
Nevertheless, the shift is fundamental. If neuro-symbolic AI can solve new problems without new training — with 78% success — it's a step toward robots that handle unknown situations similarly to an experienced human: through understanding principles, not just memorizing examples.

Is neuro-symbolic AI available for regular companies or only for research institutions?
For now it's primarily academic research — practical deployment requires further development and integration into industrial platforms.
